Mercy Corps: Commends United Nations for Supporting Refugees

December 17, 2018

In response to the UN General Assembly endorsing the Global Compact on Refugees, Mercy Corps Chief Executive Officer Neal Keny-Guyer issued the following statement:

“Mercy Corps commends the UN General Assembly for overwhelmingly passing the Global Compact on Refugees. As the world faces the worst refugee crisis since World War II, today’s vote signals international support for the millions of people fleeing violence, war or persecution. To realize this agreement’s potential, member states must translate these commitments into concrete pledges at the Global Refugee Forum, scheduled for 2019.

However, Mercy Corps is disappointed that the United States was one of the two countries to oppose this resolution. As the world’s largest humanitarian donor, the United States has a long and proud history of helping people who have been forced to flee their homes. We call on the United States to stand with the majority of the world and support efforts to address the global refugee crisis by implementing the Global Compact on Refugees.”
