Yemen is facing devastation by war, and half of Yemeni people do not have enough to eat. Mercy Corps is working to relieve the intense suffering of women, men and children, many of whom were struggling before the crisis began.

Mercy Corps was selected by The Times as one of three organisations for their 2018 Christmas Appeal.

We’d like to express our thanks to The Times and Charities Trust for their support of this work, and to The Trip Advisor Charitable Foundation for match funding this appeal.

Who is Mercy Corps?

Mercy Corps is a global team of humanitarians who take on the world’s toughest challenges to help people build better, stronger lives. Our 5,000 team members work in 40 countries, many of which are the most fragile and conflict-affected. Last year we connected nearly 28 million people to the resources they need to survive and build stronger lives.

Why are we responding in Yemen?

The crisis in Yemen, caused by prolonged conflict, has led to staggering impacts on human life, basic public services and the economy. Families are struggling to survive, severe outbreaks of cholera and other communicable diseases are ongoing, and the risk of famine looms. Today, 22.2 million people within the country are in need of humanitarian assistance. Yemen was already one of the poorest countries in the Middle East before the conflict began. Most people did not have reserves to rely on.

Mercy Corps provides food vouchers to the most vulnerable people and we’re treating malnourished children at mobile health clinics and health facilities. We distribute essential supplies like blankets, toothbrushes and soap. Since cholera is a water-borne illness, good hygiene is critical for stopping the transmission of this and other diseases. We are also providing several cholera treatment centres with clean water, equipment and other much-needed medical supplies.
