Having seen both incredible suffering and hope in his 25 years in the humanitarian field, Nigel Pont is dedicated to making the world a better place and enabling others to do the same.
Nigel joined Mercy Corps in 1997 as a project manager in Tajikistan, as the country’s civil war was nearing an end. Since then he has also served as country director in Afghanistan, programme director in Indonesia, regional programme director for the Middle East and co-founder of the global emergency operations team.
In his current role as Mercy Corps’ chief people and strategy officer, Nigel oversees all things related to team and culture, technology, internal communications, knowledge management and strategic planning. He has held this position since 2015.
In his work with Mercy Corps, Nigel has had the privilege of providing leadership and support to help the organisation’s diverse global team do the best work of their lives. What he appreciates most about the experience is having the opportunity to make a difference.
Nigel previously worked for CARE in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and as a consultant to Oxford University, NATO and the United Nations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Southampton and a master’s degree in coaching and consulting for change from Oxford University and HEC Paris.
Currently based in Portland, Oregon, Nigel is a British citizen but spent his childhood in the U.K., Iran and Pakistan. When not working, he enjoys being outdoors, especially hiking, gardening and bicycling, as well as spending time with his family — including his dog — and staying in touch with friends and family around the world.
