Denise Rocks is Business Development Program Manager for Mercy Corps Haiti. Denise has a background in investment banking, and transitioned to a focus on corporate social responsibility in a Caribbean-based international telecommunications company, focused on emerging markets. There, she managed the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ program, Haiti’s premier competition recognizing and encouraging entrepreneurship. She began working with Mercy Corps, an US based International NGO, to adapt its successful on-line business mentoring platform (MicroMentor) to the Haitian context for implemention across the country. In doing so, she created an international model for MicroMentor, with plans to roll out similar programs in West Bank Gaza and Tunisia. She has also worked on mentoring programs in the past, including those aimed at refugees and asylum seekers in the country of asylum.

What is your wish for Haiti?
Business Development Program Manager, Haiti
This is not the type of question you hear very often here. Everyone talks about what Haiti needs: shelter, infrastructure, healthcare. But it is rare to ask Haitians what they wish for their country.
At a recent Social Business workshop, hosted by YY Haiti in association with Grameen Creative Labs, all barriers were broken down. Entrepreneurs, business students and non-governmental organisation (NGO) staff from Haiti and abroad came together to answer this question — as well as to discover how social business can answer some of Haiti’s wishes as well as its needs.
