Satellite images of the destruction

Here are three satellite images that detail the scale of the destruction in Port-au-Prince. The images include the National Palace, Downtown Port-au-Prince and Sylvio Cator Stadium. The images reveal flattened buildings, high numbers of people in the streets and the gathering of the displaced in front of the National Palace and inside Sylvio Cator Stadium.

World Humanitarian Day

Established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2008, August 19, 2009 is the first World Humanitarian Day. The designation of the day is a way to increase public understanding of humanitarian assistance activities worldwide. The day also aims to honor humanitarian workers who have lost their lives or been injured in the course of their work.
