Imagine living where every book, signpost -- even price tags -- contain only mysterious symbols. Now imagine helping a woman learn to understand those letters and words, and use them to defend her rights, keep her family healthier -- even run a small business.
Mercy Corps teaches literacy and numeracy to women’s groups in extremely poor and isolated communities. Through intensive classroom and mentoring programs, these women learn how to read, write, count and sign their names for the first time.
