Kevin Grubb raised $570 for Haiti Earthquake Recovery

As international relief efforts continue in Haiti, a Mercy Corps earthquake response team is in Port-au-Prince responding to urgent needs.

I know many of you have responded with generous support of your time and cash and work--this is great, but much more is still needed from thoughtful, concerned people like you. As the immediate relief efforts become to phase into more long-term recovery initiatives, Mercy Corps will be leading the way in a comprehensive approach to social and economic recovery for Haitians.

From my six years' experience in the US and the field, Mercy Corps' strengths are in these more measured, long-term solutions to facilitating communities' taking ownership of their own immediate and future development to build secure, productive and just communities.

With communities participating in their own decisions about their own needs, they take ownership of the results and sustain the improvements made in their lives. We only present them with the opportunities available, from economic resources to infrastructure to civil society with the full inclusion of marginalized groups, including women, children and now, in Haiti's case especially, the disabled.

I urge you to support these ongoing efforts that, as we have heard a thousand times on TV, will take years to help the country recover from the devastation of the earthquake of January 12.

Thank you to all of you who have already given to the immediate relief efforts. Please consider adding to Haiti's recovery. For those of you who have followed the aftermath, and wondered how you can help, now is your chance. I'll keep you updated on this page as to developments in the work Mercy Corps is undertaking with Haitian communities, with your support.

Thanks,
Kevin

Project summary

Project summary
Just hours after a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti — killing thousands and displacing up to two million people — Mercy Corps began deploying an experienced, field-tested emergency response team. Upon arriving in Port-au-Prince, we went immediately to work, talking with displaced survivors about what they needed most. We delivered 15 tons of food to the city's biggest hospital. We got clean water flowing again in medical clinics and shattered neighborhoods. We ensured a reliable income for survivors by creating a cash-for-work program, which also began revitalizing failing local economies. Today, our team is working with survivors, local authorities and partner organizations on long-term plans — including job creation — that will help Haiti rebuild better and stronger.
