The Harsh Legacy of "Africa's Great War"

Image 1 of 16
Across Congo, some 1.2 million people have fled their homes due to horrible violence. Life expectancy has dropped by a stunning 10 years - to just 44 - since 1997. In North Kivu, a province of 6 million people along the mountainous border with Uganda and Rwanda, 600,000 are displaced, with fresh waves of people fleeing for their lives in the past two weeks. What will the future hold for Marie, 11, who lives with a host family in Lac Vert after fleeing her home two months ago? Someday, she wants to be a doctor. "I could help so many people," she says.
