China

China is transforming itself by the day. We're helping ethnic minorities, migrant workers, rural farmers and earthquake survivors keep up with this rapid change and find their places in a vibrant new economy.

When a 7.9-magnitude earthquake devastated China’s Sichuan Province, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing nearly five million, Mercy Corps worked with its local partners to mount an emergency response. We distributed critically needed household supplies, including water, food, hygiene kits and shelter materials, to thousands of families. And right from the start we have applied our experience in trauma recovery, training local mental health professionals to support the special needs of children who lived through the quake. This young survivor begins the road to healing by writing about her feelings on a mural.
