Big band aids, big heart

Country: Haiti
Topics: Emergencies

The caption for this photo on Amiri's fundraising page reads, "help me help others!"

Amiri Horn could well be the youngest fundraiser in Mercy Corps’ history. Just three and a half, he saw the devastation in Haiti on the news and knew right away he wanted to help.

First Amiri asked his mother, Ayana, if he could set up a lemonade stand. No, she said, it’s too wet and cold out. Next, he wanted to collect money for band aids.

“They need really big band aids to help them feel better,” he said.

So Amiri and his mum set up a personal fundraising page on the Mercy Corps website. So far, he’s raised an impressive £315 Best of all, the next time he saw the news, Amiri noticed a picture of a child with a fresh bandage on his head.

“Hey, that’s my band aid on his head – I helped him get that!”

Amiri is proud to be making a real contribution. He’s now aiming to raise £500 on his fundraising page – and he even managed to convince his mum to let him do a lemonade stand, too.

It's great that people are having an incredible reaction to Haiti. This little fellow has got a big heart. But as I understand it, aid is flowing to the country and however is not getting to the people because the U.S army is taking the roads and airport. Morever the gangs are taking the streets and the army is not doing anything about it.

Perhaps these are issues that we also need to address, governments are not going to to it. We need to demand real help from them. Is so frustrating see all that suffering and a not appropriate response from authorities.

It's also thought that the disaster was provoked by the americans playing with the climate weapons technology they are developing. Don't know just do your research. We need to wake up!

I have met Amiri. I paddle with his dad on Synopsys Dragon Boat team. Amiri
must be a very old soul because he is wise beyond his three and a half years.
